858 MW power unit at the Bełchatów Power Plant
Power unit No. 14 with a capacity of 858 MW, erected at the Bełchatów Power Plant in the locality of Rogowiec (Kleszczów municipality, Bełchatów county, Łódzkie Voivodeship), owned by PGE Górnictwo i Energetyka Konwencjonalna S.A. of the PGE Group. It is the largest coal-fired unit in Poland, fuelled by lignite from the nearby open-pit mine. Construction of the unit began in 2007, with Alstom as the general contractor. The unit was officially placed into operation on 28 September 2011; total capital expenditure amounted to about EUR 1.2 billion. At peak, as many as 2 thousand people from more than a dozen countries worked on the construction site.

Significance
The 858 MW unit is the largest single power unit in Poland and one of the largest lignite-fired units in Europe. It was built as an expansion of the Bełchatów Power Plant - the largest thermal power plant in the country - and at the time of commissioning was presented by PGE as the most modern and most efficient unit in the Polish power system, with the lowest cost of energy generation. The investment, worth about EUR 1.2 billion, reinforced the role of the Bełchatów complex as a pillar of national electricity production.
